I’m pretty happy with the way the final turned out. The song is called If We Had a Say. It’s co-produced, recorded, mixed, and mastered by yours truly. Have a listen and tell me what you think! :)

i just read a cool blog post about how r.e.m. has open sourced 11 videos for a song off their new album to encourage listeners to remix the videos and share them on r.e.m.’s youtube page.

this is pretty exciting to hear, not necessarily because i want to participate, but because music is going more visual and interactive. this is something i’ve been predicting for quite some time. and incidentally, it coincides with our plans to market the music we have been producing.

these days people want an all encompassing experience… touching on as many senses as possible. so we’re working on integrating sound, sight and touch into our promotional materials to fulfill those desires and give the end user a new and unique way to experience our music. the days of passing out mix tapes and cd’s are over.

‘you suck at photoshop’ by donnie hoyle. check em out! they are tutorials covering some photoshop basics. really hilarious and surprisingly informative :)

there are some rumors floating around that it could be either dane cook, or david cross. i’d venture to say it’s more dane cook than david cross, but make the decision for yourself.

here’s the link to the youtube video for volume #1, the rest of the videos (6 in total) are up in the ‘related videos’ section. i’m not gonna embed them because they have already been chronicled in more detail on a couple other blogs.

enjoy. you suck at photoshop #1.

well maybe i was wrong… i’m starting to see things a little differently. i’ve had a lot of time to reflect on my life and the choices that i’ve made, my ideals, morals and values; and not surprisingly, i’ve been a selfish asshole.

i thought about my parents… and how it’s wrong that i should deny them the joy of being grandparents. they deserve it.

so i guess my life wouldn’t be complete without at least one more apple product i own crapping out on me when i need it the most. well it happened… surprise, surprise. my brand new macbook just bit the dust… after only 6 months.

there is a lot of bitching and moaning going on in the tech world about apple lately. and it’s funny, because most people are just now figuring out what i’ve been saying for over a year: the quality of apple products has been on a steady decline for quite some time now. i’ve had two laptops and an ipod die on me in the past 6 months.

luckily, this time the fallout wasn’t as bad as when my powerbook ate it. i had somewhat of a recent backup (3 weeks) and i was able to recover the most important data i had on the failed drive with diskwarrior. but for about 8 hours there, i was a little worried. all my business plans, recent recordings and design projects were on there.

i really want to ditch apple; i’m really disappointed with them. but i can’t! it’s so frustrating. i love logic too much, it is a critical tool in my workflow. so it looks like i’m stuck having to put up with their crappy manufacturing and quality issues for the unforeseen future. unless… well… no, scratch that, i hate pro tools even more, so that’s not even an option.

it’s kind of ironic… i’m so deeply immersed in music right now… in all aspects. it’s crazy. yet i feel so disconnected from the majority of new music being put out. i remember when i was younger, i’d spend hours at the record store, and online, researching new artists and labels and crafting a style… it used to be fun.

i don’t know if i just don’t have time anymore… maybe that plays a part. but the point is, i miss it. i need to do it more. i spent a few hours in the record store last weekend and it felt really good. i can’t wait until i can afford to start buying vinyl again. not necessarily to sample or play out, but just because i think the music is interesting.

the internet makes it too easy to get new music, and i’ll admit, at times i find myself with too much to listen to…. but it’s not the same. i used to have to put in work to reap the rewards. the work was what made it special, and when it’s not special anymore, what’s the use?

i almost feel sorry for the music business, their model is outdated and it’s starting to show its age. with the continued proliferation of digital music, eventually there won’t be any more tangible mediums. and that makes me sad.

again, i’ve been really bad about posting on a regular basis… i really tried but i just have way too many things going on. everything has been going well though…

school is going great.. just wrapped up the final mix of my first recording and i’m turning it in today. it was a 4 piece jazz band, and we did a live recording. it was interesting cramming 4 people and their instruments in a small live room, but with careful mic positioning i was able to get some pretty good results for my first time out. i’ll post the track(s) to the music page sometime this week after everything settles down. i can’t believe i’m almost done with school, but i’m super excited about the opportunities it will afford me.

it’s also a very exciting time for my crew… we’re in the process of formulating a legitimate company out of what we’ve always done for the love of the music. but more on this in a later post.

2007 was also the first year that i joined in on the huge new years eve party my family has going on every year in austria. it was epic. 8 days of snowboarding and good times. also more about this in another post… with pictures!

the weather has been god awful for about 4 months now. i was definitely taking living in a place with a nice climate for granted. never again will i talk shit about the sun… if you’re listening, i’m sorry i doubted you. i used to love rainy days because they were so few and far between, but with rain every day, it tends to get old real quick.

well, till next time…
